It's my strong belief that the best writing being published at the moment is in translation, I've Eurotrash at home waiting for me. Some favourites, new and old: Anything written by Natalia Ginzburg; Tove Ditlevson's Copenhagen Trilogy; Is Mother Dead and If Only by Vigdis Hjorth are both unsettling and compelling; Colombe Schneck's The Paris Trilogy is in response to Annie Ernaux's writing is exhilarating; Kairos by Jenny Erpenbeck was probably my favourite book last year; Siblings by Brigitte Remain is terrific; Sweet Days by Fleur Jaeggy, I really want to read more of her work; I loved An Apprenticeship or The Book of Pleasures by Clarice Lispector - again want to read more.
Definitely have more but hopefully something in there for you to enjoy. Cx
Thank you so much, these all sound amazing. I loved The Copenhagen Trilogy and The Paris Trilogy has been on my list for absolutely ages. We should start a translated book club! Xx
Nice one, Ellie. That Elaine Constantine picture: unbelievable, bet it's the best picture in the whole exhibition. Is that Brighton or somewhere? Literature in translation - did you ever read The Lover by Marguerite Duras? Short & sad & autobiographical - you'd like it. x
